Many producers, service centers, analysts and others predict robust growth of 6 to 7 percent in worldwide consumption of stainless steel through the remaider of 2000. Brian Leslie, SSINA's director of stainless steel market development, says growth among North American users will occur in four main areas:
Architecture and construction:
"We're working with contractors, architects and design engineers to get stainless back into buildings. We've given up a lot [of market share] to aluminum over the years but we're making some good strides," Leslie says.
Infrastructure: Because of its greater corrosion resistance, stainless steel rebar is increasingly being used in road and bridge contstruction in place of carbon rebar. Stainless is being used in more than 30 road projects in Ontario, Oregon, New York, Minnesota and elsewhere. Although the initial cost of stainless is greater, it has the advantage when total life-cycle costs are considered, Leslie says.
Water distribution: " Stainless has been used in water treatment plantws for some time, but now we're competing against copper for the water inlet systems in major buildings. We're approved by the American National Standards Institute and we're cheaper thatn copper, so we think we have some real possibilities there, " Leslie says.
Fasteners: "We've almost doubled the amount of U.S.-produced fastener material. And although we'd prefer that people used stainless panels, stainless fasteners can be used with aluminum panels," Leslie notes.
Later this year, ths SSINA will launch a Web site
www.sensationalstainless.com, which will be aimed at educating consumers about the benefits of stainless. Promotional efforts to date have successfully increased consumption , but the group is now adopting a different strategy.
" Virtualyy every appliance company now has a line of stainless steel products. What we've done so far is push the use of stainless through the manufacturers. What we're trying to do now is get the consumer to pull the demand through and to want stainless steel." Leslie says.
