CONSISTENCY IN MANUFACTURING

This Case Study Added On: April 2, 2001

The Harris Manufacturing Company is an O.E.M. running CNC machines producing parts for its manufacturing and replacement parts lines. Broad volume swings caused Harris to maintain a network of outsource shops it could farm work out to when demand peaked. The trouble was a specific part may be made three times in one year and each time be made by a different company. Understandably, there were subtle variations between the finished products. Finishes varied and tolerances were not held closely enough.

Procurement coordinator, Henry Huckabee, was resposible for the finished components. "Not only customers, but our own technicians noticed the variation." He went on to point out that even if the item fit and functioned as called for, the perception of difference caused the technician to have doubts.

"I used to dream about setting up production runs and building a years uspply of everything. That way consistency wouldn't be an issue." Sai Huckabee, who would sometimes spend an hour explaining the situation to an uneasy client.

Sharing his concerns with Reltney Corporation one of the subcontractors involved, Huckabee was told of a stainless steel product the subcontactor had used on other contracts that might help solve the problem. AMERIMELT, he learned, is a domestic stainless steel with excellent free machining consistency. Because it is so workable, tolerances could be held much more closely and consistency for batch to batch was a non-issue.

"The demand spikes didn't stop," said Huckabee, "but AMERIMELT gave me a way to satisfy everyone involved. We're not overstocked with finished or raw inventory. The subs and our guys love working with the stuff, and the users are confident in the finished product."

With AMERIMELT IT'S WIN-WIN.

AMERIMELT is available only at Empire Metal Supply.
